Between mountains and lakes
Heiterwang am See

Heiterwang am See (Heiterwang at the lake) is idyllically situated between the Lechtal and Ammergau Alps, right next to the Heiterwanger See lake with the very same name. Thus, the name of the village is no coincidence. Together with the Plansee lake (connected by a canal), the Heiterwanger See lake forms the second largest body of water in Tyrol. The combination of mountains and lakes therefore offers ideal conditions for numerous leisure activities, both in summer and winter.

Useful information

Heiterwang am See is situated at just under 1,000 metres and includes the districts of Unterdorf, Oberdorf, Bichl, Ennet der Ach, Mühle and Achfeld. Neighbouring villages are Breitenwang, Reutte and Bichlbach. The village lies at the entrance to the valley known as Zwischentoren ("between the gates"), stretching between the Fernpass and the Ehrenberg Castle ruins – a peaceful setting shaped by mountain views and its close proximity to the lake.

The name goes back to the term “Ayterwanch”, which translates to “nettle meadow”. It originally had nothing to do with the lake itself – the modern name developed gradually over time.

Heiterwang am See was first mentioned in 1288. For centuries, its fish-rich mountain lake attracted anglers from across the region. Thanks to its position between the Fern Pass and the Reschen Pass, the village also served as a small trading hub. The canal linking Heiterwanger See with the Plansee still shapes the landscape today.
