Is a vignette required?

A vignette is only compulsory for motorways: Vignettes can be purchased at petrol stations. The shortest period of validity is 10 days. A daily vignette is a new, purely digital product and is available in the ASFINAG toll shop or the ASFINAG app. There is no statutory toll or vignette obligation on Austrian federal roads.

Is there a nearby airport and how far is it from the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena?
  • Innsbruck Airport: approx. 1 hour by car (75 km)
  • Memmingen Airport: approx. 1.5 hours by car (113 km)
  • Munich Airport: approx. 2 hours by car (145 km)

Zugspitze
Where is the Zugspitze located?

The Zugspitze is located in the Wetterstein mountain range, of which it is also the highest peak, and forms part of the border between Tyrol and Bavaria.

How high is the Zugspitze?

At 2,962 metres, the Zugspitze is the highest mountain in Germany and one of the prime viewing mountains in the Alps. In good weather, you can enjoy the 4-country view of the two and three thousand metre peaks (and the only four thousand metre peak) of the Eastern Alps.

How do I get up to the Zugspitze?
  • Ehrwald: The Tiroler Zugspitzbahn railway takes you directly to the summit from Ehrwald. Even the ascent in the panoramic cabins with a capacity of 100 people is an experience. You glide almost silently up the mountain, overcoming a height difference of 1,725 metres in just 10 minutes. The cable car operates all year round, except during maintenance periods. There are several ways to reach the Zugspitze from the German side.

  • Cog railway: The cog railway runs from Garmisch-Partenkirchem to the Zugspitzplatt glacier station in just under 75 minutes. From there, you can continue with the glacier railway
  • Cable car: The cable car starts at Eibsee. The journey takes about 10 minutes from here. It is possible to change from the cog railway to the Zugspitze cable car.

What activities are on offer?

An ascent on foot is only recommended in summer and only for experienced mountaineers.

On the Zugspitze, you can enjoy the view, try Bavarian or Tyrolean specialities in restaurants, visit the "Fascination Zugspitze" adventure museum and go skiing and snowboarding in winter.

Are there family-friendly hiking trails in the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena?

In the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena, we offer hiking trails for all ages, including special trails for pushchairs. There are also adventure trails and even escape trails for extra fun while hiking.

Are there special activities for families with children?

The Tiroler Zugspitz Arena offers numerous family-friendly activities in summer and is also part of the Tyrolean Family Nests. These stand for family holidays at the highest level.

There is a professional children's and youth programme in summer and special children's ski courses in winter.

Three of our six ski areas are certified family ski areas.

In addition, many family hotels have special offers for young and old.

Some of these hotels are even certified Nestpartner family hotels. Guests at these hotels take part in the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena children's and youth programme free of charge.

What is the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena?

On the south side of the famous, almost 3,000m high Zugspitze are seven charming holiday resorts that together form the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena holiday region: Ehrwald, Lermoos, Biberwier, Berwang, Bichlbach/Lähn-Wengle, Namlos and Heiterwang am See. And each village has its very own character.

Here you will not only find warm hospitality, but also countless opportunities in summer and winter to enjoy sporting activities, savour local delicacies and get to know the culture and traditions of the region.

Which mountains are there in the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena?

The Zugspitz Arena lies between four impressive mountain ranges: the Wetterstein Mountains, the Mieminger Kette, the Lechtal Alps and the Ammergau Alps. A list of our most beautiful, spectacular, highest and most scenic mountains can be found here.

What activities are on offer in summer?

In the holiday region between lakes and mountains, families with children, ambitious sports enthusiasts and leisure holidaymakers will find exactly what they are looking for. The offer is incredibly diverse, with the main activities in summer certainly being hiking and biking. Walkers, hikers and mountaineers will find over 150 varied, well signposted hiking tours in the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena. Bikers and e-bikers can experience 1,000 kilometres of numerous tours, including many single trails. Of course, the entire infrastructure is available, from bike hire to washing and service stations.

But there are also numerous alternatives to hiking and biking in the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena. Climbing, golf and mini golf, paragliding, archery courses, summer tobogganing, tennis and other summer activities are on the holiday programme. You shouldn't miss out on a visit to the lakes and waterfalls! Enjoy a boat trip on Lake Heiterwanger See, refresh yourself in swimming lakes and outdoor pools or hike to the springs of the Loisach and rushing white waterfalls.

What activities are on offer in winter?

Several ski areas with state-of-the-art cable cars and lifts await you in the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena. The ski region is equally suitable for beginners, families with children and racing carvers. Children's ski schools, courses for adults, ski hire and free ski buses offer everything skiers of all levels can expect. Special attractions are the winter sports activities in the evening. Away from the ski slopes, however, there is even more to experience, from the dense network for cross-country skiers in classic and skating style to horse-drawn sleigh rides, ice skating and curling.
