Facts & figures

Where is Lermoos?

Lermoos is located right between the Lechtal Alps, Ammergau Alps and the Wetterstein range. It also borders with the outer edge of Lermooser Moos – a former moorlands area – through which the river Loisach flows.

By the way: It’s not entirely clear where the town’s name comes from. Some people suspect its derived from “Lärchenmoos” (larch moss). Others believe it comes from “Larinmos” which means something along the lines of “empty, unused moorlands”.

A look back in time

The history of Lermoos

Lermoos is among the oldest towns in the Tyrolean Außerfern region – it was first mentioned in official documents in 1073 and 1078. However, the ancient Roman road Via Claudia lead right through the village even before then. Due to its favourable location at the Fern Pass, Lermoos quickly became an important economic location – albeit this was somewhat dampened by the construction of roads across Arlberg. After World War II, the town became the most important town for tourism in the Außerfern region.

A mecca for mountain bikers

Summer in Lermoos

Just in time for the start of summer season, the single tracks on Grubigstein in Lermoos attract action-hungry mountain bikers. With the guides of the local bike schools, downhill enthusiasts can explore countless beautiful routes. Hikers finder their own little piece of heaven on the surrounding peaks as well – for instance, on Daniel, the highest summit in the Ammergau Alps. If you’d like to change things up a bit, you can certainly do so at the golf course of the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena or at Flugschule Alex Rauter (flight school).

It’s all about fun in Alpine terrain!

Winter in Lermoos

Mountain sports enthusiasts can spend incredibly diverse winter days in Lermoos – especially at Grubigstein ski resort. The mountain is also a fantastic location for winter and snowshoe hikers who want to explore the region on longer tours and enjoy the breathtaking scenic views in higher altitudes. Cross-country skiers, on the other hand, are usually found in the valley – in the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena’s historic (and now mostly dry) moorlands.

What’s more, holiday guests can look forward to countless event highlights in Lermoos: The ski shows and nighttime sledging.

Fun and adventure with Moosle

Lermoos for families

In summer, the whole family can look forward to various adventures with Lermoos’ mascot Moosle – on the Explorer Trail and on the Magic Forest themed trail or at Moosle’s high ropes course. Young downhill fans who would like to brush up on their technique can do so at the Skill Area or on the Velosolutions pump track. Lusspark with its soccer field and beach volleyball court or Lermoos open-air pool are other great destinations for excursions with the whole family.

Families who spend their winter holidays in the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena will particularly enjoy the family-friendly Grubstein ski resort. Wide and easy slopes, skiing lessons, a Skimovie slope: There are plenty of options for little and grown-up winter sports enthusiasts to have fun in the snow. And besides skiing and snowboarding, the sledging run in Lermoos is yet another highlight for families.

Culture & attractions

When it comes to cultural attractions, Lermoos is especially known for St. Katharina Parish Church and many little chapels. Holiday guests who would like to learn about the town’s history should also visit Felsenheim Residence and the “3-Mohren-Museum”. To enjoy the best views of the valley in the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena, we recommend hikers and bikers stop by at the Tuftl Alm scenic-view platform.
