Where is Lermoos?
Lermoos is located right between the Lechtal Alps, Ammergau Alps and the Wetterstein range. It also borders with the outer edge of Lermooser Moos – a former moorlands area – through which the river Loisach flows.
By the way: It’s not entirely clear where the town’s name comes from. Some people suspect its derived from “Lärchenmoos” (larch moss). Others believe it comes from “Larinmos” which means something along the lines of “empty, unused moorlands”.
The history of Lermoos
Lermoos is among the oldest towns in the Tyrolean Außerfern region – it was first mentioned in official documents in 1073 and 1078. However, the ancient Roman road Via Claudia lead right through the village even before then. Due to its favourable location close to the Fernpass, Lermoos quickly became an important economic location – even if the economic strength was slightly reduced by the construction of roads across Arlberg. After World War II, the town became the most important town for tourism in the Außerfern region.
