Guesthouse Roter Stein - Hunting tradition in the heart of Kleinstockach

Robert Hörbst is the owner of the Roter Stein guesthouse in Kleinstockach. As a true hunter, he loves sharing his passion for hunting with his guests by serving them delicious dishes he has hunted himself.

Already as a young boy, Robert Hörbst, owner of the inn Roter Stein, went hunting with his father. However, not everyone is allowed to shoot however they want and whatever they want, as Robert knows: ‘I passed my hunting test in my early 20s and thus received my hunting licence. This authorises me to hunt in our hunting ground. Hunting ensures a balanced population of game - it simply wouldn't work without it in these days.’ If there are too many roe deer or red deer, for example, protected forests such as those in Tyrol are at risk from browsing or damage to the plants. The primary goal is to achieve and maintain a balance between the forest and the game.

Robert shares a hunting ground with three other tenants. ‘In winter, we count the animals at the feeding stations,’ he explains. ‘We document the number, sex and age. This is used to draw up a shooting plan for the hunting ground in collaboration with the hunting authority.’ The hunting season runs from June to December.

A huge responsibility

‘The top priority is hunting expertly’, the owner of the inn Roter Stein makes clear. This refers to the code of ethics for hunters. It includes rules that should be observed during the hunt and beyond. ‘This includes, for example, that animals should not suffer when shot. You should not hurry before shooting. Furthermore tensioning the game affects the quality of the venison,’ adds Robert.

The guests at the inn Roter Stein not only enjoy the hearty fare, but also a special exhibit: a stuffed wig roe buck. The male deer suffered from a rare disorder that inhibits the release of testosterone. As a result, the bone substance of the antlers begins to proliferate - looking like a curly, tower-like wig.
