A winter wonderland – away from the piste

For many people, winter is the loveliest of all seasons in the mountains. But if you think a winter holiday is all just skiing or cross-country, you’ve obviously never been to the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena. We have great cross-country trails and slopes, but also a huge number of other, gentler outdoor activities – for anyone who loves the winter.

Here’s our top five of gentle skiing alternatives in the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena:

Tobogganing: nostalgic thrills through the bends – even in the dark!

Tobogganing is THE winter sport for young and old alike. There are plenty of places to do it in the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena, and the fun doesn’t stop when the sun goes down. Night-time tobogganing with lift access and filling snacks is available, for example in Ehrwald (3-kilometre toboggan run; refreshments in the Tirolerhaus, Ehrwalder Alm, Ganghofer Hütte, Brentalm), in Berwang (1 km; refreshments in Das View - the Pop up), and in Lermoos (3 km; refreshments in the Brettlalm). Good to know: if you prefer your thrills in the daytime, you can of course get them at the toboggan runs at Grubigstein and in Berwang at the Egghof Sunjet.

Winter hiking: far from the mayhem on the slopes

Hiking on snow-covered trails in the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena – a joy for any passionate hiker. When the heavens open and the snow comes tumbling down, more than 60 kilometres of summer hiking trails are transformed into perfectly groomed winter hiking trails. Now you can fill your lungs with healthy mountain air on the sunny side of the Zugspitze! But even when enjoying this gentle winter sport, remember to think about your safety! To make sure that nothing goes wrong, the service checklist for the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena has helpful tips on winter hiking.

Snowshoeing: no longer with tennis rackets strapped to your feet

Snowshoeing between the valley villages in the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena is the deeply relaxing alternative to cross-country skiing – and doesn’t require that much effort. You can hire snowshoes, poles, and other equipment from local sports shops. Snowshoe walkers don’t need to follow the cross-country trails; they make their way right through the deep snow of the winter wonderland. From easy to hard, the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena offers a diversity of routes with all levels of difficulty. If you’re hiking in the valley, you don’t need to worry about avalanches or other alpine risks. Just hike and marvel at the scenery! It’s a simple yet incredibly rich experience.

Llama hiking

‘Llama whisperer’ Heidi Hofherr from Biberwier takes visitors on a hike with the shaggy, good-natured creatures. On a one-and-a-half-hour excursion, animal lovers big and small get to know ‘their’ llama. Each guest is paired with a specific animal. From the sporty to the relaxed four-legged friend, Heidi has something for everyone. Excursions with Heidi and her friends take place regularly and can also be privately booked.

Horse-drawn sleigh rides

There are three good reasons to go on a horse-drawn sleigh ride in the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena. One: a leisurely trip through the winter landscape is simply wonderful! Not just for romantics and newly-weds, but also young and old, families, and couples. Two: sleigh rides proceed at just the right pace to immerse yourself in the deep snow-covered landscape and relax. Three: a sleigh ride is the perfect way to unwind. Take a deep breath, let your mind wander, and enjoy the peace and quiet away from the winter hustle and bustle.
