My favourite mountain bike tours in the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena

Article by Tanja Priller

The Tiroler Zugspitz Arena offers perfect conditions and beautiful landscapes for a mountain bike tour. Whether you want to go on a relaxed or a more sporty tour - there is something for everyone. Choosing 3 favourite mountain bike tours is therefore not that easy. Here are 3 tips:

1st Via Claudia Augusta - relaxed tour with culture, few metres in altitude

56 km, 700 metres in altitude

Starting point: Reutte, end point: Imst

The Via Claudia Augusta was built over 2000 years ago by the Romans as the first transalpine road. It connected the regions north and south of the Alps and promoted trade and cultural exchange. Today it is an approx. 700 km long cultural-touristic theme road that combines history and nature.

The section in the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena is 45 km long and is part of the middle section of the Via Claudia Augusta. It offers a particularly varied natural landscape and you cycle past lakes, forests and historical sites. The route is known for the fact that you can experience three "seasons" in one day - e.g. snow on the Fernpass, spring in the valley and summer in sunny sections. An ideal tour if you want to take in some culture as well as a relaxed workout.

2nd Grubigalm summit house Grubigstein - many metres in altitude, great views, trails

20 km, 1200 metres altitude

Starting point: Lermoos, end point: Grubigstein summit house, trails of your choice back to the valley

Take the forest path up to the Grubigstein summit house. The path is steep in places, but still easy to ride. The beautiful landscape and views of the Zugspitze make it easy to forget the effort. This tour is ideal if you want to work off some energy. Once you reach the top, you have the most beautiful view of the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena on this tour. The route back down to the valley can be chosen freely; there are a variety of trails. My favourite: the flowing Bachtl trail. If you still haven't had enough, you can tackle the ascent all the way up again or to the middle station and try out another trail.

3rd Zugspitz-8 Tour - a long tour that you simply have to do

The Zugspitz-8 leads around the Zugspitze and the Wetterstein mountains through Bavaria and Tyrol. The route is 112 kilometres long in total and offers countless breathtaking views of the mountain massif. There are also beautiful mountain lakes on the route, such as Ferchensee, Plansee and Heiterwanger See. There are also numerous places to stop for refreshments. A summary of all the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena highlights. If required, the tour can of course be split over several days or extended with additional routes. There are numerous starting points for the tour.

ALTERNATIVE

3. to the Seebensee

9km, 630 metres in altitude, optionally continue on foot from Seebensee (bike&hike)

Starting point: Ehrwald, end point: Seebensee

The route starts on a small asphalt path through the forest and climbs a few metres to the Ehrwalder Alm.

Past the Tirolerhaus, the route follows a gravelled forest path to the alpine pasture at the entrance to the Gaistal valley. There are already some beautiful viewpoints here, and the further you get, the more beautiful it becomes. So it's worth persevering. Once you reach the top, you will find the beautiful Seebensee lake with views of the Wetterstein massif and the Zugspitze.

Optionally, you can then continue on foot from the bike car park at Seebensee to the Coburger Hütte and Drachensee, which is around 300 metres higher.
