1. bike care: Now is the time for an all-round check
In addition to regular cleaning, you can use the off-season to look after your bike more intensively and do something good for it. Here are a few points you can use as a guide:
- Proper cleaning of the chain and drivetrain using a degreasing drivetrain cleaner and subsequent maintenance with chain oil
- Check the drive: check the chain and drive parts for wear
- Check brakes: check the pads for wear, clean the brakes with brake cleaner and have the brake fluid changed if necessary
- Tighten bolts: it is best to check the bolts with a torque spanner
- Clean and check bearings: if you feel up to it, remove your bike's bearings and maintain them. Otherwise, visit a workshop, especially if you have been riding a lot in muddy conditions or notice signs of wear in the bearings
2. training: take a breath
Use the off-season to give your body a break. You can use this time ideally to do things that you otherwise don't have enough time for, such as a long autumn walk, yoga or meeting up with friends. Generally speaking, a technical training programme with uphill skiing, i.e. without exertion, is also a good idea. Of course, you can also do gentle balancing sports, but always make sure that you don't push yourself too hard and give your body time to recover. Therefore, always consider whether you will feel fresher or more exhausted after the planned activity.
3. motivation: time for new goals
The off-season is an ideal time to review the past season. Think about what you are proud of, but also what you could change for the better. It generally helps to set new goals to motivate yourself. So whether it's a race, bikepacking tour or personal best times, set yourself specific goals so that you are highly motivated when you start training.
The off-season is not a break, but an important phase of regeneration and preparation. Use it consciously - your body and your bike will thank you for it!
