Museums Tyrol: Discover the treasures of the past
The Tiroler Zugspitz Arena offers many beautiful locations as well as exciting museums. Two true cultural gems are the Berwanger Heimatmuseum and the Zunftmuseum in Bichlbach.

Majestic mountain peaks in the background, green fir trees, an old farm and a rustic atmosphere. That's right, it can only be the Berwanger Heimmuseum. The history and culture of the Berwanger Valley can never be better known than at this museum in Tyrol. The beautiful museum is located in the last historic building in Berwang - the farm of Simon Koch.
400 years of time travel thanks to the museum in Tyrol
Fancy a short trip back in time? In 1988, the municipality acquired the property and built a small museum in it. After the 400-year-old farm was opened as a museum in 1999, Hanni and Jakob Sprenger took over the management and design of the Berwanger Heimatmuseum in 2001. The exhibitions show insights into the development history of the village and thus provide a look back at an almost forgotten time. If you've always wanted to know how people lived and cared for themselves in the countryside back then, this museum in Tyrol is just the thing for you.
During the summer season, this museum in Tyrol is open every Friday from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. With free admission, visitors have the opportunity to watch butter stirring and carpet weaving, and to taste freshly baked yeast pastries, waffles and farm bread. The rustic décor of the kitchen and living room with historical work objects also gives the Berwanger Heimatmuseum its own unique flair.
An insight into the history of craftsmen
Paul Strolz is the acting president of the Zunft fraternity of St. Joseph zu Bichlbach, which from 1694 was considered to be the center of all craftsmen. Today, the Zunft brotherhood organizes guided tours of the Zunftkirche - the only one of its kind in Austria. Here you can discover stunning works by various craftsmen from that time. In the 18th century, the local Zunft Brotherhood supported the construction of the church. It is single-aisled, has two crypts and is decorated with beautiful frescoes. The showpiece is the ten meter high altar, almost entirely gilded. But not only in the Zunft church, but also the museum in Tyrol presents the history of the craftsmen in an impressive way.
Original artifacts
The old Widum contains valuable materials and Zunft signs in five different rooms and shows how carpenters, bricklayers, painters, plasterers and sculptors worked at that time. One gem is the well-preserved Zunft drawer, for example. This is a chest from the former ownership of Zunft. The special thing is that it contains the oldest surviving foundation certificate of a Bichlbach Zunft. . It is the only copy that can be admired as a faithful replica in book form. The Zunfthaus is due to remodeling and renovation work until Sept. 15, 2023, after which the museum's historical objects can be admired again.
